  • Data Center DDoS Cause of Recent Lag

Over the past few days, our game servers have experience some short periods of intense lag and our server provider me that it's been caused by a DDoS directed at our datacenter. I don't know how long it will persist, but that's the cause.

So would that explain why I've been randomly been disconnected from servers today? Or is that my college internet being obnoxious?

Oh wow, would have never guessed that was the cause. Why must a small group of people always try to ruin fun for everyone else.

Distributed Denial of Service Attack. Basically, a bunch of computers, usually in a "zombie" network controlled by a single individual request information from a server repeatedly all the same time. The result is that the server has to process so many requests that it lags, or if the volume becomes sufficient, crashes. DDoS attacks are a pretty common method of wreaking havoc on servers connected to the internet.
