  • RPG Minecraft Guide

This is a guide to the commands used on
the Team Interrobang Minecraft Role-Playing Server
    Located at: mc.teaminterrobang.com:25566

The RPG Server is set up as a balance between vanilla multiplayer minecraft - which usually devolves into griefing and obnoxious people - and the creative server, which involves no risk of death, but can't risk having strangers join in, to prevent griefing.

Here, you can play Survival Minecraft - testing your mettle against the zombie hordes, building legit structures from hard-won resources, and joining friends in creating a world of your own - but without the chaos of anarchy! Your prized statue of Zeus made of solid diamonds will be safe, so long as you lock the door. You can also find friends and rivals; fighting or befriending each other as you choose!

These are the main plugins we use:
    • Towny - Sets up a system of protected areas, called towns. A mayor and their assistants add and remove people from town, and they can set permissions in their area. Towny info Towny Commands
    • Minecraft MMO (MCMMO) - Rewards players with skills and bonuses for mining, collecting crops, etc., by giving abilities such as chances for mined blocks to double-drop, a chance to survive long falls, and more. MCMMO Skills
    • Jobs - Rewards players with money for doing related Minecraft stuff. Miners are rewarded for breaking most blocks where you'd use a pickaxe, and Blacksmiths are rewarded for creating tools, weapons, and armor.
    • Lightweight Chest Protection (LWC) - Allows players to lock, share, and generally protect their chests. Also adds the insanely handy "magnet" capability. See "LWC" under "Protecting Your Stuff."

    Finding Your Way

Where am I? Which way is up!?
If you've just joined our server, you are near a town called Hedholm, and across the bridge from the Arena. This is where everyone starts, and its coordinates are 42, -21. You can find your current coordinates by pressing F3. Feel free to walk around. Unlike in regular Minecraft, you don't have to worry about monsters in town. Outside of town, there will be monsters.

If you walk around Hedholm, you may see notifications coming up that say, "~ [For Sale: 150.00 Dollars]". This means that this area of Hedholm is for sale, for $150. You may see other notifications, that will inform you if you have entered another town ("~ Rune (Town)"), or have left town and are in unclaimed wilderness ("~ Wilderness (PvP)"). "(PvP)" and "(No PvP)" signify whether or not it's possible to harm (stab, hit, etc.) fellow players. Most towns have PvP (players attacking players) turned off, but any wilderness will have it enabled.

Who's playing, and who are the admins?
You can see who's online at any time by typing /list into chat (t), or pressing the tab key.
Just like on our TF2 servers, anyone whose name begins with [!?] is an admin on the server. Suspicious Character, Spooner, GJ, and Impulse Nine are the main people who keep the server running (referred to as "Senior Admins"), but everyone with the [!?] tag has basic admin powers (kick, mute). If you want help, or just to have friends to help you enjoy the server more, you should join our Minecraft Forum to introduce yourself, join the Steam group, and add admins to your friends list.

    How should I get started?
If you're brand new to Minecraft, you should start by reading some basic tutorials and learning basic crafting recipes.

If you're already familiar with Minecraft, the basics are about the same:
    1. Bring friends (This is multiplayer! It's much more fun with friends... or enemies!)
    2. Find a nice hidey hole at least 500 units away from Hedholm.
    3. Kill monsters, play arena and mine until you have some basic materials (iron tools, some armor, and health)
    4. Either join a town or found one to protect yourself and your buildings (we'll get to that)

    Mob Arena
Across the bridge from the Spawn building is the Mob Arena. It's a small building with an sand floor where you can fight monsters consequence-free! You don't have to be anywhere near the arena to play. This is a great way to start out on the server, because it will reward you with some of the basics you need to start playing Minecraft: Bread, torches, arrows, iron, etc.

To play, empty your inventory, and type /ma join.
To watch, empty your inventory, and type /ma spectate.

When you arrive at the arena, you'll be in the Arena Lobby. Just punch a sign to choose a class, which will change the items in your inventory. The options are:
    • Tank - Iron sword, 2 pork chops, and diamond armor without the helm
    • Knight - Diamond sword, 2 pork chops, and iron armor
    • Archer - Bow with 512 arrows, Wood sword, 2 pork chops, and chain mail armor
    • Chef - Stone sword, 6 bread, 4 porkchops, 1 soup, 3 cake, 12 cookies, and gold armor
    • Barbarian - Diamone axe, gold axe, 2 pork chops, and iron armor
    • Wolf Master - Stone sword, 2 invulnerable wolves (your wolves are the ones that are on fire), 1 porkchop, 2 bones, and chainmail armor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Nomad - Stone sword, iron axe, bow with 64 arrows, 4 bread, and chainmail armor
    • Alchemist - Wood sword, 1 porkchop, 1 bread, and leather armor with iron chestplate, plus:
      • Splash Potion of Harming
      • Splash Potion of Harming II
      • Splash Potion of Poison (0:33)
      • Spash Potion of Regeneration (0:33)
      • Splash Potion of Healing
      • Potion of Strength (3:00)
      • Potion of Regeneration (0:45)
      • Potion of Healing

Your weapons will not deteriorate in combat, but your armor will.

Arena will reward you based on how many waves you make it through. Its rewards are based on specific waves, as well as periodic rewards. For example, after wave 7, you will recieve an iron ingot, and every 2 waves, you'll get bread. Rewards are given to all players in the Arena who survived to that level, and are awarded as soon as players die. Here are the specific rewards:

    • Rewards for specific waves:
      • Wave 7: 1 iron ingot
      • Wave 9: 1 gold ingot
      • Wave 13: 2 iron ingots
      • Wave 16: 1 lapis block
      • Wave 23: 4 slimeballs
      • Wave 30: 1 diamond
      • Wave 40: $200
      • Wave 50: 1 diamond block

    • Periodic rewards:
      • Every 2 waves: 1 bread
      • Every 4 waves: 1 bread, 2 torches
      • Every 6 waves: 1 bread, 2 torches, 4 arrows
      • Every 8 waves: 2 torches, 4 arrows, 1 grilled pork
      • Every 10 waves: 4 arrows, 1 grilled pork, 4 coal
      • Every 12 waves: 1 grilled pork, 4 coal, 4 leather
      • Every 14 waves: 4 coal, 4 leather, 1 log

When you and your friends have faced your inevitable defeat, you will get your rewards and be teleported to the roof of the Arena. If you want to play again, you'll need to empty your inventory of your rewards, so you'll find some chests there in which you can temporarily store them (these are public chests, so don't put anything highly valuable there).

When you've satisfied your monster bloodlust, type /ma leave, and you'll be teleported back to where you typed /ma leave. Be sure to leave the arena, or you may get a message saying "[MobArena] No sharing allowed at this time!".

    Money
In the Team Interrobang Minecraft server, money is used for a few things:
    • Buying items from shops
    • Paying upkeep on towns
    • Buying additional land for your town

It would be possible to get by in the server without any money, but we've worked hard to make sure that just by playing Minecraft, you can earn yourself a tidy wage.

    Jobs
The Jobs plugin gives players the ability to earn money and experience by doing what they do best in Minecraft, be that as a Miner, Lumberjack, Farmer, Hunter, Excavator, and Architect. Players may choose two jobs at the same time, and can switch at any time, but lose all XP for jobs they abandon.

Jobs pay both money and experience. The higher a player's XP in a job, the more income they get from their efforts. In order to prevent grinding, most jobs penalize for placing commonly-mined blocks, such as coal ore.

    The jobs are:

    1. Miner - Rewarded for breaking blocks, and penalized for placing them
    2. Hunter - Killin' mobs!
    3. Farmer - Paid to break crop blocks and place seeds
    4. Excavator - Paid to dig!
    5. Lumberjack - Paid for breaking tree blocks and planting trees
    6. Architect - Paid for placing blocks and items things associated with buildings.

    You can give someone money

    Sell items
We also use the Showcase plugin, which allows players to set up a safe way to sell their materials. You can sell anything you can put into your inventory, for whichever price you specify. You can set up three types of showcases:

    • Basic: This is just for display/decoration and doesn't sell anything.
    • Finite: This will sell a specified quantity of an item at a set price.
    • Exchange: Will exchange one type of item for another at a specified ratio.

    To create a showcase (shop):
    1. Place a half-block of any kind (sandstone, stone, cobblestone, or wood).
    2. Sneak (Shift button) and right-click with the item you want to sell in hand.
    3. Into chat (t), type basic, finite, or exchange
      1. Basic: No additional steps
      2. Finite:
        1. Open chat (t) and type the price per item
        2. Open chat (t) and type how many you want

      3. Exchange:
        1. Hold something in your hand (warning: If you're selling/exchanging feathers, have fewer than 10 in your hand or you'll attempt a Chimera Wing escape)
        2. Crouch (shift) and right click
        3. Type exchange into chat
        4. Type the kind of material you want (i.e., diamond)
        5. Type the ratio of [#given]:[#recieved]
          For example: 1:64
        6. Type the number you want to sell (it will tell you how many you have available).

To remove a showcase (shop), Sneak (Shift button) and right-click.
If you shop has made sales, you will get text notifications. If you have made exchange sales, you will need to left-click the showcase to retrieve the items. Make sure you have plenty of room in your inventory when retrieving items! If they don't fit, they'll be spilled onto the floor, so it's a good idea to have a locked chest or two nearby to put excess items into (see below about chest protection).

    Protecting Your Stuff

    Towns
We use a plugin called Towny, which allows players to set up towns. The player who sets it up can specify varying levels of protection from mobs and other players in town. This gives players a safe haven from which to mine, fight, and create. Specifically, a town can:
    • Prevent mobs from spawning within its borders (they can still wander in)
    • Prevent mobs from existing within its borders (they will disappear at the border)
    • Prevent players (citizens or outsiders) from being able to damage each other
    • Prevent outsiders from building or destroying blocks (i.e., no griefing)
    • Prevent outsiders from using switches or doors

Minecraft maps are broken up into 16 (width) x 16 (length) x 128 (height) sections of blocks. Towny ignores the height an focuses on the x and z planes.

Each town can claim up to 16 blocks per resident. Residents themselves have no limit on how many they claim, however they will have to pay taxes (more about taxes below).

Below you can see an example of 3 towns using the grid structure. Each cell represents 16x16 blocks (and 128 blocks high of course).

pay taxes to the town based on how many they have. Taxes are taken every 24 real-time hours.

When you're walking around the map, you'll get notifications when you go in and out of territories. There are seven types of land:
    • Unclaimed (Wilderness) - Mobs spawn, people die, and can attack each other.
    • Claimed - Land that belongs to a town
    • For Sale - Land that belongs to a town that is up for sale
    • Your Town - Land that belongs to your town
    • Your Plot - Land that you've purchased within your town
    • Ally - Land that belongs to a town with which you are allied
    • Enemy - Land that belongs to a town with which you are an enemy

To see a map of your immediate area, type /towny map. If you want that map to pop up anytime you change blocks, type /rr set mode map. This can be very irritating if you want to read chat, so you can turn it off again with /rr set mode reset.

    Starting a town
    1. Consider finding some friends to help you. They can help you build the town, and pay the taxes that will be needed to keep the town in existence.
    2. You will need $750 to start out, but you should have at least $900, because every (real-time) day, the game will take $50 from the town bank - or the town ceases to exist. You can also check prices by typing /towny prices.
    3. Once you have the money and some partners in crime, find a good place to put your new home. Some people like big, obvious, imposing locations. Other people like to hide and burrow like Moria. Find a spot that suits you and your friends.
    4. Type /towny new .
You can change the name later with /town set name .
    5. Check the details of your town: /town

There's various info there - how much money your town has, the name of the mayor and town, the number of residents, etc. We will work with permissions later.

Let's first look at what it says next to "Town size" - 1/16. This is the number of town blocks that currently make up your town (1) on the left side of the slash, and the total number that you can claim for your town (16). To increase the number of plots, you need to either add a new resident, or buy an additional plot.
    6. To claim additional town blocks, walk about 10 blocks in any direction that you want to expand your town in, until you see "~ Wilderness (PvP)" in your chat window. While you're still on the border, type /town claim. You can only claim plots on their edges. Repeat as necessary.
    7. If you make a mistake, you can unclaim a town block with this: /town unclaim.
    8. Ask someone to join your town: /town add
    9. To help make sure your town gets its required $50 per real-time day, you can have your citizens pay taxes. To set the amount, type /town set taxes [amount].

    Setting Permissions
Now that you have a town, you have to decide what's allowed and what isn't. Mayors are able to set town permissions that affect all townblocks within the town that are unowned. Use the /town command to bring up your town details. The permissions line is represented with B=fao D=fao S=fao I=fao.
The capital letters stand for the type of permission:

    • Build permissions for block placement
    • Destroy permissions for block removal
    • Switch usage for items like levers and buttons
    • Item Use permissions for items like buckets and lighters (flint & steel)
The lower case are the groups that are permitted:
    • f = resident
    • a = ally
    • o = outsiders
The minus symbol "-" is used to show that you are denying the permission for that group.

The default permissions turns off all permissions for outsiders, but allows all permissions for your town residents, and allies. Allies can be members of other towns that belong to the same Nation as your town does.
    • This is the specific command format:
      • /town set perm [resident/ally/outsider] [build/destroy/switch] [on/off]
      • You can remove elements of this to apply more general permissions:
/town set perm [on/off] - This would turn on or off all permissions
      • town set perm [resident/ally/outsider] [on/off] - This would turnsoff all Ally permissions)
For example: /town set perm ally off
      • /town set perm build [on/off] - This would turn on/off all Build permissions

    1. What if you're feeling overworked, or you need some administrative help while you are offline for a couple days. You have two options:
      1. First, you could transfer the mayorship over to someone else:
        /town set mayor [resident-name]
      2. Or you can recruit a few of your town residents to assist you. Assistants are able to help change permissions, add/remove residents and set up plots.
        /town assistant [add/remove] [resident-name]

    2. Other Mayor-only Commands
/town set board [message] - This is displayed to players when they view your town details, and when they arrive in town.
/town kick [playername] - To remove a resident from a town.
      /town delete [town-name] - Delete a town.
/town withdraw/deposit [amount] - Rob the town coffer!

    Expanding the town

    Buying additional plots
So your giant statue of a Monty Python foot's toes are outside your territory, and you want to expand your town, but you've already run out of plots you're allowed to /town claim. No problem. You can buy more plots for $350 apiece. The command is /town buy bonus X, where X is the number of plots you want to buy.

    Creating Outposts
If you would like to claim an area not contiguous to your main town, you can claim an outpost. The most common reason to do this is to claim an area in the Nether or the Adventure worlds. The command for this is /town set board, and it costs $500. Once you have the first outpost plot, additional plots can be claimed as normal.

Becoming and being a resident of a town
    1. Join a town
